Update on my Life – Full Time Indie

Well, last I wrote about my career progression I was back at the Hospital.  Well, my wife and I made a deal.  I have until next May.  She’ll continue at her job, there are some retirement benefits vesting and other career considerations to keep her there, I’ll stay at home and take care of the twins, and continue my grand experiment.

We (Third Rail Games) released our latest game, Factor Samurai almost a month ago.  I have also been working on writing educational content for a popular game development blog, raywenderlich.com.

This has kept me busy now for almost two months.  I am still green when it comes to some of the technologies and so writing about it requires many drafts before I’m comfortable putting it out.  I will say, writing about coding is a huge learning experience, my confidence in my ability is growing fast.

I still have contracting opportunities on the horizon and a few that I have completed.  I would rather focus on my own development, but I’m learning that just making a good game, doesn’t make you a successful app developer.  You also have to understand how to get it noticed.  That’s part of the reason that I have started to do more writing.  The other reason is that I really like sharing knowledge, it’s one of my favorite things to do.

I would like to go over the story of how Factor Samurai came to be, but I think I’ll leave that for a later date.  Here’s a quick gameplay vid that we made, you can see what it’s all about:

I intend to do a better job of keeping track of my progress here.  I have thought much about the endeavor of creating your own product/business.  I’d like to share these.
